Undertone review – disappointing podcast horror is mostly skippable

A24's new horror release, Undertone, promises a terrifying tale of mysterious recordings that send shockwaves through a group of horror podcasters. However, beneath its creepy atmosphere, the film relies too heavily on familiar tropes from other horror classics, leaving audiences feeling like they've seen it all before.

Writer-director Ian Tuason's debut feature is notable for its resourcefulness, as he expertly utilizes a low budget to create an unsettling atmosphere. Shot in one house, with most of the sinister events confined to audio footage, the film keeps viewers on edge. Lead actress Nina Kiri shines as Eva, a vulnerable protagonist navigating her way through a complex web of emotions and terrifying occurrences.

As Eva delves deeper into the mysterious recordings, she becomes increasingly entangled in a world of creepy tales and demonic entities. While Tuason's script initially shows promise, it gradually becomes muddled and predictable, relying on tired horror clichés to keep viewers hooked. The film's climax, a chaotic and exhausting attempt at creating tension, ultimately falls flat.

Ultimately, Undertone feels more like a showcase for writer-director Ian Tuason's potential than a fully realized horror story. While his debut is effective in generating a sense of unease, it fails to deliver on its promise of terror. As such, fans of the genre may find themselves left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed by this disappointing release.

Despite its flaws, Undertone remains an intriguing example of how resourcefulness can overcome budgetary constraints. With a reported seven-figure deal secured by A24, Tuason's future prospects look promising. However, for now, fans of horror will need to settle for a more satisfying experience elsewhere.

I gotta say, I was low-key excited about Undertone, but after watching it, I felt like I'd seen it all before too 😐. Don't get me wrong, Nina Kiri's performance as Eva is on point and that one house setting? Super creepy! But for me, the film's reliance on familiar tropes kinda made it feel like a rehash of other horror flicks. And yeah, Ian Tuason's budget resourcefulness is straight fire 🔥, but I wish he'd taken more risks with his script. It was like he was playing it too safe? Maybe I'm just not used to seeing horror done this way... or maybe I've just seen too many good horror movies 🎃

🤔 I don't know about this Undertone business... it sounds like they took every cliche from other horror movies and mashed them all together into one film 🎃. I mean, a group of podcasters investigating creepy audio recordings? It's been done before, and not in a good way 😐. And don't even get me started on the fact that most of it happens in one house... how original is that? 😴 I'm all for low budget creativity, but when does that mean sacrificing actual plot development? 🤷‍♂️

I just watched Undertone and I gotta say, it was like they took every bad horror movie from the past 10 years, threw 'em in a blender, and hit puree 🍹👻. Don't get me wrong, Ian Tuason's got skills - that low-budget setup really added to the tension 😬. Nina Kiri is also super talented as Eva... but dude, the script just got too convoluted for its own good 🤯. They tried to pack in too many creepy plot twists and it all fell apart 🚮. I'd say Undertone's more of a "oh no, this guy's got potential" kind of deal rather than a full-on horror masterpiece 😐.

I gotta say, I was hyped about this one but Undertone just didn't hit the right notes for me 🎃️. It felt like they took some awesome ideas and mashed them with too much of what's been done before in horror movies 🤯. Don't get me wrong, that creepy atmosphere is still on point 🌑, but it was hard to get fully invested when the plot started getting all muddled 💭.

And Nina Kiri as Eva? She totally brought the vulnerability vibes 💔, but even she couldn't save this movie from its predictable moments 😴. I'm curious about writer-director Ian Tuason's future though - if he can refine his script and stick to his unique vision, he might just create something truly terrifying 🎬. As it stands, though, I'll be waiting for the next one 👀

🤔 "The truth is rarely pure and never simple." - Oscar Wilde 💡 Undertone tries to be all things to all people but ends up being just okay. A24's low budget resourcefulness pays off in terms of atmosphere, but the script just can't quite get there. Nina Kiri shines as Eva, that much is for sure. Maybe this one will learn from its own mistakes and grow into something scarier next time around... 🎃

I just watched Undertone and I gotta say, it was like a bunch of old horror movies mashed together 🤯. I mean, don't get me wrong, the creepy atmosphere was super effective, but it felt like they were reusing tropes from other classics without adding anything new to the table. It's like they took The Ring, The Conjuring, and all those other horror faves and said "let's just make a movie with these ideas". And yeah, lead actress Nina Kiri was great, but I feel like she got lost in all the familiar horror clichés 🎃. Don't get me wrong, it was still kinda fun to watch, but it didn't really leave me screaming... more like "meh, that was okay" 😐.

I'm not sure I agree 🤔... I mean, Undertone is defo a bit formulaic, but you can't deny the tension that comes with watching it in the dark with no lights on 😱. And Nina Kiri's performance? Superb! She really brings this whole "vulnerable protagonist" vibe to life 💀. But yeah, maybe it relies a tad too much on familiar tropes... but honestly, I think that just makes it more accessible and entertaining for fans of the genre 🤷‍♀️. And let's not forget, A24's got some serious resources behind this thing, which is always gonna shine through in terms of production quality 💸. Still, it's defo a flawed film, but can we really expect a horror movie to be perfect? 😅

idk about this new horror flick Undertone... it seems like the writer-director is trying too hard to be creepy and instead ends up relying on every other horror cliche out there 🤦‍♂️. i mean, a low budget can actually work in your favor if you use it smartly, but here it just feels like they're using it as an excuse to skimp on production quality. Nina Kiri's performance is decent, but even she can't save this mess from becoming predictable and exhausting 😴. overall, i'd say it's more of a showcase for the director's potential than a fully realized horror film 🎥.

I gotta say, I was really hyped for Undertone but it ended up being kinda underwhelming 🤔. Don't get me wrong, the atmosphere is super creepy and Nina Kiri's performance is on point 💀, but man, that script just gets predictable and muddled in the middle. It's like they took all these cool horror ideas and just...phoned it in 😴. I mean, come on, seven-figure deal from A24? That should've meant more polish, right? Instead, we get a messy, low-budget horror flick that's only redeeming quality is its ability to make me feel uncomfortable 🎥. Still, I'm intrigued by writer-director Ian Tuason's potential and I'll keep an eye on his future projects...but for now, Undertone just didn't do it for me 😐

I'm soooo not feelin' this one 🤦‍♀️, Undertone feels like a total rehash of every other creepy horror movie out there...like, I get it, low budget can be resourceful and all that jazz 💡, but can't they come up with some new tricks? 😒 Nina Kiri's acting is on point tho 👍, she definitely holds the whole film together. But seriously, who thought "demonic entities" was a good idea 🤪? And don't even get me started on the ending... it just felt like they ran out of ideas 🚫. Overall, I'm gonna have to say this one's a skippable horror flick for me 😴

I'm so disappointed with Undertone lol 😒 I was hyped about it at first, but like, the more I thought about it, the more it felt like they recycled tropes from every other horror movie 🤯 I mean, come on, a low budget can be a great thing, right? But in this case, it just made everything feel super claustrophobic and tense, you know? The whole audio thing was so cool at first, but after a while, it started to feel like a gimmick 🎧 And Nina Kiri's performance was amazing, I loved her character Eva, she's so relatable 😔 But overall, I just didn't get the scares I was expecting... maybe A24 will give Ian Tuason another chance? 🤞

omg I just watched undertone and I'm soooo disappointed it didn't quite deliver on the scares 🤯♀️ i mean don't get me wrong, i loved the creepy atmosphere and nina kiri's performance was on point 💁‍♀️ but like the plot got so convoluted and predictable 😴 after a while i was just guessing what would happen next because every familiar trope showed up out of nowhere 🎃♂️ still, it was super interesting to see how writer-director ian tuason made the most of his low budget 💸 i'm rooting for him, though - maybe he'll surprise us with a better film next time? 🤞

I just watched this new horror flick Undertone and I gotta say, the atmosphere is super creepy 🕷️! The idea of mysterious recordings that send shockwaves through a group of podcasters sounds so cool! 💻 But honestly, it felt like they were rehashing old tropes from other horror classics 🤔. I mean, come on, a haunted house with most of the action happening in audio footage? That's been done before 😴.

The lead actress Nina Kiri is actually pretty great as the vulnerable protagonist Eva 💁‍♀️. But the script started to get all muddled and predictable after a while 🤦‍♀️. The climax was just too chaotic and exhausting to be tense 😓. Overall, it felt like more of an intro for writer-director Ian Tuason than a fully realized horror story 🎬.

I do think he's got potential though! 🤞 And hey, using low budget resources can go a long way in creating unease 🎧. The deal A24 just gave him is promising 💸. We'll see if he delivers on his next project...

I just saw this movie and I gotta say it was kinda meh 🤔🎃. I mean I love the vibe and atmosphere they went for but it felt like we've seen all these horror tropes before. Like, yeah, creepy house, weird recordings, demonic stuff... yawn 😴. But at the same time, I do appreciate how low-budget it was - it actually kinda worked in its favor? The lead actress was solid tho, Nina Kiri 🤩. Maybe with some more editing and a tighter script, this could've been something else entirely 💡. Guess you can't win 'em all though... 😐

I gotta disagree with this review lol 😂 undertone is still super creepy and I loved the way it built up that tension! yeah i get what the reviewer means about the script getting muddled but for me it was all part of the charm 🎃 nina kiri does an amazing job as eva, she's so relatable and her character's struggles are really easy to root for 💖 don't even get me started on the audio footage - it's like they're speaking straight to your soul 👂 maybe i'm just a sucker for horror movies but undertone might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's definitely worth watching if you're a fan of the genre 🎥

OMG you guys I just watched Undertone and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it 😂 the thing is I get what they're going for, all those creepy audio recordings and stuff but come on, it's so formulaic 📺 like they took every horror movie from the past 20 years and mashed them all together into one big mess 🤯 I mean, what really got me was how predictable it was, I literally saw the twist coming a mile away 💡 and don't even get me started on the "demonic entities" thing... it's just so overdone 😴

I do have to give props to the lead actress Nina Kiri though, she totally sold that whole vulnerable protagonist vibe 🤗 and Ian Tuason's low-budget magic is definitely a win in my book 💸 but overall, Undertone feels like a missed opportunity, you know? Like, they had all the right ingredients but somehow it just fell flat 😔
