The haunting Masters meltdown that changed Rory McIlroy’s career | CNN

Rory McIlroy's Masters nightmare

Tears would flow during a phone call with his parents the following morning, but at his press conference, McIlroy was upbeat. “I’m very disappointed at the minute, and I’m sure I will be for the next few days, but I’ll get over it,” he said.

“I was leading this golf tournament with nine holes to go, and I just unraveled … It’s a Sunday at a major, what it can do. “This is my first experience at it, and hopefully the next time I’m in this position I’ll be able to handle it a little better. I didn’t handle it particularly well today obviously, but it was a character-building day … I’ll come out stronger for it.”

Once again, McIlroy would be proven right. Just eight weeks later in June, McIlroy rampaged to an eight-shot victory at the US Open. Records tumbled in his wake at Congressional, as he shot a tournament record 16-under 268 to become the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods at The Masters in 1997.

The historic victory kickstarted a golden era for McIlroy. After coasting to another eight-shot win at the PGA Championship in 2012, McIlroy became only the third golfer since 1934 to win three majors by the age of 25 with triumph at the 2014 Open Championship.

Before the year was out, he would add his fourth major title with another PGA Championship win.

And much of it was owed to that fateful afternoon at Augusta. In an interview with the BBC in 2015, McIlroy dubbed it “the most important day” of his career.

“If I had not had the whole unravelling, if I had just made a couple of bogeys coming down the stretch and lost by one, I would not have learned as much. Luckily, it did not take me long to get into a position like that again when I was leading a major and I was able to get over the line quite comfortably. It was a huge learning curve for me and I needed it, and thankfully I have been able to move on to bigger and better things. “Looking back on what happened in 2011, it doesn’t seem as bad when you have four majors on your mantelpiece.”

A runner-up finish to Scottie Scheffler last year marked McIlroy’s best finish at Augusta, yet arguably 2011 remains the closest he has ever been to victory. A slow start in 2022 meant McIlroy had begun Sunday’s deciding round 10 shots adrift of the American, who teed off for his final hole with a five-shot lead despite McIlroy’s brilliant 64 finish.

At 33 years old, time is still on his side. Though 2022 extended his major drought to eight years, it featured arguably his best golf since that golden season in 2014.

And as McIlroy knows better than most, things can change quickly at Augusta National.

The missing piece

McIlroy’s contentment came with a caveat: it would be “unthinkable” if he did not win The Masters in his career.

Yet as he prepares for his 15th appearance at Augusta National this week, a green jacket remains an elusive missing item from his wardrobe.

Despite seven top-10 finishes in his past 10 Masters outings, the trophy remains the only thing separating McIlroy from joining the ranks of golf immortals to have completed golf’s career grand slam of all four majors in the modern era: Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.

omg rory mcilroy's masters nightmare still gives me chills 😱🏌️‍♂️ like he was leading with 9 holes to go and then just kinda lost it 🤯 but that experience actually helped him come back stronger in the us open and eventually win those 4 majors 🔥 i think the key is he learned from his mistakes and didn't give up on himself 🙏 now at 33, time is still on his side 👀 hope he can finally get that green jacket 🎉

omg i cant believe rory mcilroy is still chasing the masters 🤩 he's been so close but just can't seem to get over the line 😔 that 2011 moment was literally the turning point for him though - it made him stronger and more determined 💪 and let's be real, 33 is still young in golf years!!! 😉 i mean, tiger woods did it at 32 so why not rory right?! 🤞 fingers crossed he gets that green jacket next year! 🏆

🤕 So Rory McIlroy's career is basically over 📉 He's still trying to win the Masters after all these years and it's getting old ⏰ I mean, 33 is not old for golf but come on Rory! You've got that US Open win under your belt already 🌟 But winning at Augusta National seems like an impossible task 😩 And what's with this drought? 8 years without a major title?! 🤯 That's just a record 📊

lol he's so focused on getting that green jacket 🏆😅 i feel like he's the real deal! his game is insane and that 2022 drought was a biggie but he bounced back strong 💪. i think what sets him apart is his ability to stay calm under pressure, even when things aren't going his way. it's clear that losing at Augusta last year was tough for him, but he's already got his sights set on next week's tournament 📆👀

I'm totally feeling Rory McIlroy's pain 🤕💔. He was so close to winning The Masters back in 2011 and it's still a major bummer for him that he hasn't won the green jacket yet 🏆😓. But, you know, failure can be super beneficial for growth and all that jazz 💪🌱! He bounced back from that disappointment and went on to have an amazing career. Now, at 33, he's still got time to make it happen #McIlroyDeservesAGreenJacket 🙏👏

omg u guys i was watching this rory mcilroy interview and it made me think of my own sports failures lol like when i was on my school soccer team and we were down by 2 goals with only 10 minutes left i totally freaked out and ended up scoring an own goal 🤦‍♂️. anyway back to mcilroy he's had so many amazing moments in golf but that 2011 masters game where he came so close is still giving me chills 😲. i feel like we can all learn from his perseverance and how it led him to become the golfer he is today 💪.

man this rory mcilroy guy is literally so focused on winning the masters haha his career just keeps getting better and better! i mean 16 under 268 at the us open? that's insane 🤯 he's basically a major champion now and it's crazy to think about how far he's come since those tears at augusta national all those years ago 😂 it's like he's saying 'i'm gonna learn from my mistakes' and boy did he ever. now he's just waiting for that one green jacket to complete his set 🏆

Man, Rory McIlroy's Masters nightmare... I mean, we've all been there, right? 😂 We hit rock bottom, and then we come back even stronger. It's like the universe is trying to tell us something - that failure isn't the end, but a stepping stone to greatness. 💥

I think about Rory's journey, and how he went from tears on the phone with his parents to being the one on top of the leaderboard at the US Open eight weeks later... it's like he was reborn or something 🌟. And that 2014 Masters win? It was like a masterclass in perseverance and mental toughness.

But here's the thing - what if we didn't have those failures, those "Masters nightmares" as Rory would say? 😅 Would we be prepared for success? Would we know how to handle pressure when it matters most?

I think that's what makes golf so fascinating - the ebb and flow of emotions, the highs and lows. It's like a mirror reflecting our own inner struggles and triumphs. 🌊

And Rory, he gets it. He knows that The Masters is still an elusive dream for him, but at 33, time is on his side... or so we think 😏. Maybe this is his chance to make history, to join the likes of those golf immortals. Fingers crossed for him! 🤞

🙏 Rory's game has been all over the place but he's still producing top-notch performances 🏌️‍♂️. His struggles to close out wins will be tested again this week but his experience in major tournaments is gonna count for something 💪. The question remains, can he finally get that green jacket and complete the career grand slam? It's about time someone from Northern Ireland joins those golf legends 🏴
