The Goldberg Variations album review – Yunchan Lim untangles Bach's complex web of threads

omg i'm literally blown away by yunchan lim's performance of bach's goldberg variations!!! 🤯 his approach is so unique, it's like he's not just playing the notes, he's painting a picture with sound 🎨 i love how he balances power and finesse in this recording, it's like he's got the perfect amount of strength and delicacy 💪🌸 his playing is so nuanced, especially in the slower variations... those moments are pure magic ✨

I'm not convinced about all these fancy music recordings being live performances at prestigious halls 🙄🎵 I mean, isn't it just gonna sound like magic tricking people into thinking its real? And what's with the different approaches to the same piece? Can't they just stick to one way of playing? The idea that Lim's performance has more 'muscular approach' just sounds like marketing hype to me 🤷‍♂️. I mean, if it's not breaking new ground or challenging the listener, what's the point? Give me a good ol' fashioned vinyl record any day! 💻

🎹 I'm loving Yunchan Lim's take on the Goldberg Variations! He brings this crazy amount of energy to it, but in a way that's still super refined. It's like he's got these tightrope skills with his fingers flying across the keys - it's impressive, but not showy. And that slow part in the middle? Chills every time. His restraint on the 25th variation is genius - it's all about letting the music speak for itself, you know?

I mean, I'm really impressed by Yunchan Lim's take on the Goldberg Variations... but at the same time, I think some parts of his performance might be a bit too calculated? Like, don't get me wrong, his skill with the faster variations is insane, but sometimes it feels like he's trying way too hard to convey emotion. And then there are moments where his playing just sounds so... robotic? 🤖 I know that doesn't necessarily sound great, but hear me out – maybe that's exactly what's needed for this piece: a bit of detachment, you know?

Also, I'm not sure about the dynamic contrast between Lim's live and recorded performances. Is he really bringing more depth and nuance to the music in New York than he was in London? 🤔 It feels like there might be some inconsistency here... but on the other hand, maybe that's just a product of the recording process itself? Ugh, I don't know, my brain is all over the place about this one 😂
