Sir Gareth Southgate believes England can be more united amid flag debate

Gareth Southgate has called for England to put aside its flag debate and unite as a nation, saying that there's more that bonds people together than drives them apart. The former Three Lions manager, who led the team to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals and the 2020 European Championship final, believes that concerns over the country coming "less united" are being blown out of proportion.

The debate over flying the St George's flag has been a contentious issue in England, with some arguing that it should be reserved for national team matches only. However, others have called for its use at all times, including during international tournaments and in domestic competitions.

Southgate thinks that this kind of debate is "divisive" and is distracting from the real issues facing English football and society as a whole. He believes that fans should focus on supporting their teams and country with passion and pride, rather than getting bogged down in arguments over flags.

"The flag is just a symbol, it's not what really matters," Southgate said. "There are more things that unite us than drive us apart. We need to be focused on the positive aspects of our game, our communities, and ourselves."

For Southgate, unity should start with unity among fans. He believes that supporters should be working together to promote a culture of respect and sportsmanship in English football, rather than getting caught up in petty squabbles over flags.

"We need to bring our fans together, not drive them apart," he said. "We have some of the most passionate and dedicated fans in the world, but sometimes that passion can boil over into negativity. We need to find a way to channel that energy positively."

Southgate's comments come as England prepares for its next international match, where it will be facing off against a rival nation with its own set of flag-related tensions. The former manager's call for unity and focus on the bigger picture is an attempt to put the debate over flags back in perspective.

"We're not just fighting for our country, we're fighting for ourselves," Southgate said. "We need to be proud of who we are, but also respectful of others. That's what being a fan is all about."

omg can u believe southgate is tryin to calm down the flag drama lol like, dude you cant just ignore the fact that its England vs everyone else ๐Ÿคฃ seriously tho i get where he's comin from we should be focusin on the team and the game not gettin bogged down in petty squabbles but at the same time theres somethin weird about flyin the flag everywhere even if its just for fun ๐Ÿ˜‚ like southgate says the flag is jst a symbol but what if its more than that tho? idk maybe ill just stick with watchin the match and cheering 3 lions on ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ

OMG, can u believe Gareth Southgate is on it again! ๐Ÿคฏ He's right though, let's focus on unity & positivity in English football, not getting caught up in petty flag debates ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ #FlagGateIsOverrated. I mean, we have so many awesome teams in England, from Man City to Liverpool, and they all deserve our support โค๏ธ #ThreeLionsUnite. Fans coming together is key, let's put aside our differences & celebrate what makes us proud, like our beautiful game ๐Ÿˆ #FootballIsLife. It's not about the flag, it's about the fans' passion & dedication, so let's channel that energy positively! ๐Ÿ’ช #BeTheChange

i think gareth southgate is totally right on this one ๐Ÿ™Œ! the flag debate has gotten so old and it's just causing unnecessary drama between fans ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. instead of focusing on our differences, let's focus on supporting each other and having fun watching footy with our mates โšฝ๏ธ. i mean, at the end of the day, it's just a piece of fabric right? ๐Ÿ˜‚ what really matters is that we're all united as english fans and cheering on our teams together ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm still salty about this flag debate ๐Ÿค”. Like, I get it, Gareth says the flag is just a symbol and we should focus on the bigger picture... but honestly, can't we just have our flags and be proud of who we are? ๐Ÿด๏ธ It's not like it's gonna hurt anyone to fly the St George's flag or not. And can we please just calm down already? ๐Ÿ˜… It's football, for crying out loud! We're supposed to be supporting each other, not fighting over tiny things that don't even matter in the grand scheme of things ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I'm all for unity and respect, but let's not lose sight of what really matters: the beautiful game itself โšฝ๏ธ.

can u believe this flag drama? it's been going on forever! remember when we used to just enjoy the game and not worry so much about the little things like flags? now everyone's so divided over it ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ it's like, come on guys, let's focus on what really matters - 3 lions winning that next match lol. southgate is right tho, unity is key, we should be supporting each other not getting caught up in petty squabbles ๐Ÿ’ฏ

I think Gareth Southgate is totally on point ๐Ÿ™Œ. Flying the St George's flag is just a minor thing compared to what really matters - like how we support each other as fans and promote respect in football ๐Ÿค. I mean, it's not about winning or losing, but about being part of this amazing community that comes together to cheer on our teams ๐Ÿ’ช. We should be focusing on the positives, like the incredible passion and dedication of English fans - instead of getting bogged down in arguments over tiny symbols ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ. Let's focus on what unites us, not what drives us apart ๐Ÿ˜Š!

I think Gareth Southgate is spot on ๐Ÿค๐Ÿผ with his comments on the England flag debate. As someone who loves watching English football (โšฝ๏ธ), I can get carried away with getting worked up over things like flags, but at the end of the day it's just a symbol and not what really matters.

I mean, think about it - when we're all cheering on our teams at the stadium or watching them play on TV, aren't we really there to support each other as fans? To show some good old-fashioned British spirit? ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ‘Š Not to argue over flags!

Southgate's right that unity is what matters most. We should be focusing on building a positive community of fans who respect and appreciate each other, regardless of which team they're cheering for. It's easy to get caught up in negativity when we start fighting over things like this, but let's not forget why we all love football in the first place: for the love of the game! ๐Ÿ†

It's also worth remembering that there are bigger issues at play here - like racism and inequality within the sport. So instead of getting bogged down in debates about flags, let's focus on using our collective passion to make a positive difference in people's lives. That's what it means to be a true fan! ๐Ÿ’–

I get what Gareth's saying... like, the flag debate's getting old and it's distracting from what really matters - the football itself ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. I mean, let's be real, we're all just fans at the end of the day, trying to support our teams and have a good time โšฝ๏ธ. But at the same time, I can see both sides... like, shouldn't we be proud to rep our country on the pitch? ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง It's not about the flag itself, but about what it represents - passion, pride, and community ๐Ÿ‘ซ. Maybe Gareth's right, though... maybe we do need to focus on being respectful of each other and not getting too caught up in negativity ๐Ÿ˜’.

omg u guys can't imagine how intense the flag debate is in england rn ๐Ÿคฏ it's like, i get where Gareth Southgate is coming from tho - flags r just symbols & shouldn't be more important than unity & respect ๐Ÿ™ but at the same time i feel like this debate is gonna keep on going 4eva because ppl are super passionate about it ๐Ÿ’ช & it's not just about the flag, it's about what it represents - pride, identity, sportsmanship... all that jazz ๐Ÿค”

๐Ÿค” I'm totally with Gareth on this one... flying the St George's flag isn't worth stressing over, you know? It's just a piece of cloth ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ’จ and it's not gonna make or break your love for England. What matters is that we're all united behind our team, supporting each other through thick and thin ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿฝ. Let's keep the focus on what really matters - like how awesome our national teams are ๐Ÿ˜Ž!

Umm... I don't get why Gareth Southgate has to jump in on this whole flag thing ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Like, can't fans just chill with each other? It's just a debate, right? ๐Ÿ™„ And Southgate's like "let's focus on the positive" but what about those who are actually hurt by these flag-related arguments? I feel like he's not getting the bigger picture here ๐Ÿ‘€. And honestly, can't we all just agree to disagree and move on? ๐Ÿค”

I'm so tired of this flag debate ๐Ÿ™„. Can't people just enjoy the game and support their team without getting worked up over flags? It's like, what's the big deal? It's just a piece of fabric waving in the air ๐Ÿ˜‚. Gareth Southgate is right, it's time to move on from this petty squabble and focus on what really matters - coming together as fans ๐Ÿค. We need more unity and less division in English football, you know? Let's support our teams with pride, not over flags ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ. And can we please just be respectful of others' opinions too? It's all about having a positive energy vibe around the game ๐Ÿ’–.

I'm so frustrated with this flag debate ๐Ÿ™„... like Gareth Southgate said, it's just a symbol and not the real issue. We should be focusing on supporting our teams, communities, and each other, rather than getting caught up in petty squabbles ๐Ÿค. I mean, can't we all just get along? ๐Ÿ˜Š It's like, we're so passionate about our football, but that passion is supposed to make us better people, not drive us apart ๐Ÿ’ช. Let's focus on unity and respect instead of fighting over flags ๐ŸŽจ.

I think Gareth Southgate hits the nail on the head ๐Ÿค. I mean, can you imagine if everyone was too caught up in their own flag debate at the beach or at a BBQ? It'd be super frustrating and ruin the vibe! ๐Ÿ˜’ The flag thing is just a small part of what makes football so amazing - it's about coming together with your mates, cheering on your team, and having a good time. Let's not forget that! ๐Ÿ†๐Ÿ‘

I feel like Gareth Southgate gets it lol ๐Ÿค”. I mean, let's be real, there's more stuff that unites us than divides us, right? Like, we're all on the same side when it comes to our teams and country, so let's not get too caught up in what flag we're waving around ๐Ÿด๏ธโ€โ˜ ๏ธ. It's easy to get worked up over it, but at the end of the day, it's just a piece of cloth. Let's focus on being good sports, supporting each other, and having fun for the sake of the game ๐Ÿ˜Š.

ugh, come on Gareth ๐Ÿ™„. Can't people just chill? it's a flag, not the end of the world. I get that some fans want to show their pride and support for the team, but seriously, how many times have we seen flags thrown or spat at opposing players? ๐Ÿด it's getting old. what southgate is trying to say is that we're better than this kind of petty bickering, but honestly, I'm not so sure... maybe we just need to find a way to show our team spirit without being divisive ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

I'm so done with people getting worked up over the England flag ๐Ÿ™„ it's just a piece of cloth, mate. Gareth Southgate is right on the money - what really matters is how we support each other and our teams. All this fuss over flags is just distracting from the fact that we've got some top-notch footballers and amazing fans who deserve to be celebrated. Can't we all just get along and enjoy the beautiful game? ๐Ÿ€ Let's focus on unity, respect, and sportsmanship - that's what being a fan is all about! ๐Ÿ‘Š

I'm so down with Gareth Southgate on this one ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ... like, come on, let's not get too caught up in the flag debate, you feel? It's just a piece of cloth, right? I think people are letting their passion for football cloud their judgment. We should be focusing on promoting unity among fans and supporting each other, not getting hung up over some silly symbol ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๏ธ... besides, if we're being real, there's way more to England than just the flag ๐Ÿ’ฏ... let's keep it positive and focus on what really matters โ€“ our communities and ourselves ๐Ÿ‘

I mean, come on! Can't we just focus on having fun watching the game? I love Gareth Southgate's message - he's right, it's not worth getting worked up over something as trivial as a flag ๐Ÿ™„. It's all about unity and supporting each other, not tearing ourselves apart ๐Ÿ’ช. And let's be real, there are so many more important issues to tackle than who gets to fly the St George's flag โšฝ๏ธ. We should be proud of our country, but also respectful of others' opinions ๐Ÿค. Let's get behind Gareth and focus on cheering on England, not arguing over flags ๐Ÿ˜Š.
