Older and younger renters: share your experiences

The traditional notion of a "first-time buyer" has long been associated with young people struggling to make ends meet, but the reality is rapidly evolving.

In England and Wales, the number of households renting privately has more than doubled over the past two decades. This drastic increase can be attributed in part to an aging population, as those from all age groups are increasingly turning to renting. The 2021 census revealed a staggering growth in the private rented sector, with 5 million households now renting, up from 3.9 million in 2011 and just 1.9 million in 2001.

But it's not just young people who are being priced out of the market. The number of older renters – those aged 55 or over – has seen a particularly sharp rise. According to the National Housing Federation, this demographic has grown by 70% since 2010/11. This trend is likely driven by a combination of factors, including rising housing costs and an increasingly complex and competitive rental market.

As we reflect on this shift in demographics, it's essential to consider the experiences of renters across all age groups. What are their hopes and fears? Have they been forced to confront the possibility that owning a property may be an unattainable dream? Do they have any horror stories from their time as renters?

We want to hear from you – if you're a renter, regardless of your age, we'd love to hear about your experiences. What's it like living in a world where renting is the norm? Have you faced challenges or triumphs as a renter? Do you have any advice for those who may be struggling to navigate this increasingly complex market?

Your story could provide valuable insight into the lives of renters across all age groups, and help to spark a much-needed conversation about the changing nature of homeownership in the UK.

🏠💸 I think it's crazy how renting has become the norm for so many people now, especially older folks who are being priced out of the market 🤯. I've got a mate whose sister rented her first home at 55 and she was super stressed about it 😬. Has anyone else had to deal with that? It's like, we're living in a different world where owning a property is just not accessible anymore 🌎💸

I think its wild how the rental market is evolving, especially with the older generation getting priced out too 🤯. I mean, I've got friends who are 50+ and they're having to rent because they can't afford a mortgage or have some other financial stuff going on. Its like, we used to think of homeownership as this huge milestone, but now its just not possible for everyone 😕. I feel bad for them, I really do 🤗.

I'm shocked how many people are being priced out of owning their own homes 🤯. I mean, I get it, housing prices have gone up and up, but 70% more older renters? That's crazy! What's really sad is that some of these people might be forced to stay renting just because they can't afford the mortgage 💸. It makes me wonder if we'll ever see a point where owning a home is considered the norm again 🏠.

I've got a friend who's 60 and has been renting for years, and he's always talking about how hard it is to save up for a deposit 🤑. I feel bad for him because he can't even think about retiring in his own place 😔. It's not just the money that's the problem – it's the lack of stability and security that comes with owning a home 🤝.

What do you guys think? Have we reached peak renting age? 🤔

I'm not sure if I'm on board with all these older folks turning to renting lol 😅...I mean, it's great that they're making the most of their finances and whatnot, but is this really the reality we want? 🤔 On the other hand, it's kinda inspiring to see people from different age groups adapting to the market, like they're all in it together or something 💪.

But, for real though, have you seen the prices of rent lately? It's crazy! 😲 I feel bad for anyone who's struggling to make ends meet, but maybe we need to rethink our priorities and stuff 🤷‍♂️. Still, I'm not sure if I'd trade my freedom to roam wherever I want for a mortgage payment anytime soon 🏠😒.

🤔 The whole thing is crazy man... I mean, I get it that people want to rent or buy property, but what's up with all these prices? 🤑 It's like they're playing some game where you gotta be super lucky to even get a place at a reasonable price. And then you got the old folks trying to fit in too... 55+ and still scrambling to find a decent spot. It's wild. 🌪️ I feel bad for them, but at the same time, it's like they're right to be cautious – the market is just so unpredictable now. 💸 What's gonna happen when all these people are trying to own homes and there aren't enough properties available? 🤯

I'm still thinking about what they said about older people renting homes 🤔🏠. I know some of my friends' parents are rentin' places now, and it's crazy how much the market has changed over the years. It's like, when I was young, me mam had a flat for like £300 a month or somethin', but nowadays it's more like £1,200... that's just insane! 😲

And yeah, 70% growth since 2010 is mental 🤑. You'd think the government would be doin' somethin' about it, but I guess they're all busy with Brexit and whatnot. 💸 Anyway, if you are a renter, especially an older one, please share your story! It's really interesting to hear about people's experiences, and maybe we can learn some tips on how to navigate the market 🤝🏠
