NYPD arrests school bus driver in deadly hit-and-run crash with girl in Brooklyn

A 62-year-old school bus driver was taken into custody in Brooklyn on Thursday after allegedly striking and killing an 11-year-old girl. Wawa Aurelus, who lives in East Flatbush, has been charged with two counts of failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.

According to police, Aurelus struck Amira Aminova at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and Bath Avenue in Bath Beach, leaving her just steps from her home. Despite being involved in a fatal accident, Aurelus did not stay on the scene.

Aminova was rushed to Maimonides Hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries. Authorities say that they were able to apprehend Aurelus shortly after 3 p.m., around the time of the incident.

The NYPD is breathing down Aurelus' neck, and he is set to appear before a judge in Brooklyn Criminal Court on Friday. However, it's worth noting that his attorney information was not immediately available at the time of our report.

This tragic incident has raised questions about the safety measures in place for pedestrians, particularly in areas with high foot traffic like Bath Beach. The NYPD is urging citizens to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.

omg this is soooo sad 😱 i'm literally shaking right now πŸ€• what's going on with these drivers? can't they just watch where they're going for one second? πŸ™„ like, 11 years old?! that kid was just a kid πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ and she's gone πŸ’” wawa aurelus needs to take responsibility for his actions πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ i mean, I know we all have bad days but this is just crazy 😲 it's like, how can you not stop at an intersection when there are people around? 🚨 seriously, the NYPD needs to step up their game and make sure these drivers are held accountable πŸ’ͺ and what about a better pedestrian safety system in bath beach? πŸ€” like, we need some serious changes here πŸ”„

πŸ˜” oh man this is so sad whats going on with buses in NY they always seem so fast I remember when I was little my grandma took me for a ride on the bus her stories were amazing πŸšŒπŸ‘΅ anyway what do you think about them putting more cameras at intersections like this do we need to be more careful as pedestrians lol can we even see each other sometimes walking down the street πŸ˜‚

😱 this is so senseless! a 11-year-old girl just walking home from school and she's gone... 🀯 what if that bus was moving at a normal speed? would he still have been charged? it seems like it's all about being vigilant with our safety rather than actually taking care of the people on the road. i feel so bad for her family, i wish they could've seen their little girl one more time πŸ€•

I just saw this thread popping up on my feed and I'm still trying to process it lol. It's just so heartbreaking what happened to that little girl πŸ€•. As a parent, the thought of their child getting hit by a bus is just too much to imagine. The fact that the driver didn't even stop to see if the kid was okay is just mind-boggling. I feel like we need to do better to make our streets safer for everyone, especially kids πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸ‘§. I hope Aurelus gets the help he needs and that justice is served, but I'm also hoping that this incident sparks some real change in how we handle accidents like this πŸ˜”.

🚨 this is so senseless, a life lost over a split second mistake... 62 years old and still driving school kids around 🚌, you'd think someone would keep an eye on him more often πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ, especially in a neighborhood with heavy foot traffic. I mean, what kind of training did he even receive to not yield to a pedestrian? πŸš—πŸ˜± the NYPD needs to make sure their drivers are held accountable for such reckless behavior... and what's up with not staying on the scene after hitting someone?!?! 🚫 that's just basic humanity, right? πŸ‘Ž

πŸ€• man this is so sad... 11 years old πŸ™ cant even walk down the street without worrying about getting hit by a car πŸš—. i feel bad for the family of that kid, i hope they get the support they need during this tough time πŸ˜”. the police should definitely do something to improve those safety measures in Bath Beach 🚨. and what's up with leaving the scene of an accident? shouldn't that be a no-brainer? πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ anyway, my heart goes out to Amira's family and loved ones πŸ’•

I'm so sure the driver was totally in the right πŸ™„... I mean, what's a few seconds extra before he leaves the scene? It's not like he's breaking any laws or anything πŸ˜’. And two counts of failure to yield and failure to exercise due care? Come on, that's just harsh πŸ’β€β™‚οΈ. The kid was probably just stepping off the curb with her eyes closed anyway πŸ™„. The NYPD is being way too aggressive here, they should be focusing on the actual perpetrators of crime, not just some poor bus driver who had a bad day πŸ˜’.

oh man that's so sad πŸ€•πŸš— what kind of world are we living in where an 11-yr-old kid can get killed by a driver who didn't even stay on the scene?! 😱 it's gotta be super frustrating for her family & friends... anyway, i'm just thinking about how much safer our streets would be if we had more pedestrian-friendly infrastructure & better traffic management systems πŸš—πŸ’¨ like, what if there were more crosswalks or speed bumps in that area? πŸ€” and wouldn't it be awesome if cars had some kind of automatic emergency stop feature?! πŸš¨πŸš— just thinkin' about it is making me wanna switch to an electric scooter for my daily commute πŸš΄β€β™€οΈπŸ’¨ anyway, sending lots of love & positive vibes to Amira's family πŸ’•

I'm not buying the idea that buses are completely safe just because they've got speed bumps πŸš—πŸ’¨. I mean, think about it, a 62-year-old dude was driving for like 30+ years and still managed to take a kid's life? It's not exactly rocket science, folks! We need better safety measures in place, not just slapdash solutions like speed bumps that don't even slow down the bus. And what about pedestrian traffic signals or crosswalks that actually work? πŸ•°οΈπŸšΆβ€β™€οΈ I know some people will say "but accidents happen" and yeah, they do, but we can do better! We need to be more proactive about safety, not just reactive when something goes wrong.

Man, this is just so sad πŸ€•. I keep thinking about my niece who was only 8 when she started taking bus rides, it's crazy how life can change in an instant. Aurelus should've been more careful, you know? He's got kids of his own and a family to think about... what would they say if they knew their dad took someone's life πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ? Anyway, I'm just glad the police were able to catch him so quickly, it's definitely a relief for Amira's family. But seriously, this incident highlights how important it is for drivers (especially school bus drivers) to stay alert and follow traffic rules. We need to make sure our kids can feel safe walking to school or playing outside without worrying about accidents like this πŸš—πŸ’”

Man, this is just heartbreaking πŸ€•... thinkin' 'bout that little girl who got hit by a bus while walkin' home from school... it's just senseless 😒. I mean, what was goin' through Aurelus' mind? He's supposed to be responsible for keepin' those kids safe on the road, but he just gets in his own way πŸš—πŸ’”. And leavin' the scene like that? That's just cowardly... or maybe just really stupid 😳. I don't think he should even get a chance to plead his case in court - two counts of failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care should be more than enough for him to face the music πŸš”. Ugh, this is so sad πŸ€• I just can't even right now... 11 years old Amira should still be here with us! πŸ™ This bus driver's actions were so reckless, he didn't even stop or call 911 after hitting her... that's just not okay 😑. Pedestrian safety is super important and we need more cameras and lights in areas like Bath Beach to prevent accidents like this from happening again. It's also super concerning that the bus driver didn't stay on the scene, that's a huge red flag 🚨. I hope he faces the full consequences of his actions and takes responsibility for what happened πŸ’”.

man this is so sad πŸ€• what happened to that little girl amira was just 11 yrs old?! 😭 her parents must be going through hell right now. i feel bad for wawa aurelus too, but at the same time he made a huge mistake on the road. i wish there were better surveillance cameras around bath beach so it could've prevented this accident. and 1 min after the incident he just left the scene?! what is wrong with some people? πŸ™„ hopefully the judge will give him a harsh sentence for his reckless driving. we need to make sure that pedestrians are protected on our roads, especially in high foot traffic areas like bath beach. πŸš—πŸ’¨

man this is so sad what happened to that little girl I'm still trying to process how a school bus driver can lose control like that on top of not even stopping at the scene πŸ€―πŸ˜” it's just not right. I feel for Amira's family and loved ones they deserve justice and answers. our city needs to take a closer look at traffic safety measures, especially in areas with high foot traffic like bath beach. what were the conditions like that day was there any warning signs or did Aurelus speed up or slow down unexpectedly? i hope the NYPD is doing their due diligence to make sure something like this never happens again πŸ’”πŸš—

I'm really shocked by this news 🀯... 11 years old Amira Aminova, she was just a kid who got hit by the bus and sadly passed away... it's like, how can someone make such a mistake? πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ I feel so bad for her family and everyone in Bath Beach. The police are doing their job and all, but you've gotta wonder what happened behind the scenes here... did the bus driver not see Amira? Was it just a split-second thing? πŸ€” We need to find out more about the safety measures in place and if they're good enough for our kids... I hope this incident makes us all think twice about being more careful around busy roads πŸš—πŸ’‘

Ugh, come on... 2 counts of failure to yield and exercise due care? That's it? I mean, I'm sure he'll get a slap on the wrist or something, but still... if you're gonna hit someone with your bus, stay on the scene, duh! πŸ™„ And what's with these intersection safety measures that aren't working?! It's like they say, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks"... but I guess that's not true in this case, since Aurelus is 62 and still driving a school bus... anyway, something needs to change here. The NYPD should be doing more to keep pedestrians safe, especially at those high-traffic areas. It's just common sense, folks! 🚨

πŸ˜” this is just devastating... an 11-year-old girl lost her life on our streets because someone was driving carelessly... I keep thinking about what could've been done differently, if only that bus driver had taken his time or checked both ways before crossing... it's a harsh reminder that even the smallest mistakes can have fatal consequences 🚨.

.. can't believe it's happened again πŸ€•. I mean, what even is the deal with people not paying attention when they're behind the wheel? It's like, basic human decency, right? And then Aurelus just takes off without checking on the kid he just hit... it's like he was more concerned about getting to his next destination than doing the right thing. πŸ˜”

It makes me think about how we all walk around each other every day, assuming everyone is going to do the right thing. But what if they're not? What if some people are just too caught up in their own world to care about others? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ It's a scary thought.

And it's not like this is an isolated incident either... I mean, we've all seen those news stories about drivers texting and driving or running red lights. It's like, how many times do we have to see people get hurt before we start doing something about it? 🚨

Man... this is so sad πŸ€•. But, you know what's even more heartbreaking? Think about all those kids who survived being hit by cars on their way home from school πŸ™. Like, what a miracle that didn't happen to Amira! And now we're talking about how to make our roads safer for everyone... it's like, progress, right? 🌈 I'm not saying this is okay or any of that, but it's actually kinda amazing how much attention is being given to this issue. The NYPD is trying to keep us safe and all that πŸ’‘. And hey, at least we can learn from this and try to make a difference, you know? So let's focus on finding solutions instead of just dwelling on the tragedy 🌻.
