NYC warns of traffic crashes as Daylight Saving Time ends and sun sets earlier

New York City officials are urging residents to exercise extreme caution when navigating the streets this weekend as Daylight Saving Time comes to an end and daylight hours dwindle rapidly. The Department of Transportation and other city agencies have launched their annual "Dusk and Darkness" campaign, a stark reminder that the weeks following the clocks' reset are among the most perilous for drivers.

A total of 174 traffic fatalities had been reported by October 19, a decrease of 16% from the same period last year. This decline, however, has not diminished the city's concern over road safety. Law enforcement is stepping up patrols to target erratic and distracted driving, with a focus on late afternoons and evenings.

NYPD Chief of Transportation Olufunmilola Obe urged drivers to "Slow down, pay attention," citing the reduced visibility as the main factor in these crashes. According to Obe, every safe choice made by drivers can help protect not only themselves but also their neighbors and loved ones.

As nightfall approaches earlier this weekend, police will be cracking down on double-parked vehicles obstructing crosswalks and bike lanes. Officials warn that reduced visibility can take up to 30 minutes for the eyes to adjust, significantly reducing reaction time.

Staff from the Taxi and Limousine Commission will also conduct spot checks in high-risk areas, emphasizing the importance of drivers being mindful of their surroundings. This is a critical reminder as many families with children plan trick-or-treating excursions after sunset on Friday.

Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez emphasized the need for vigilance, stating that "as we prepare to celebrate the holiday season, everyone should go home safely." By working together and taking extra precautions, New York City can minimize the risk of traffic accidents during this critical period.

Umm I dont no how i feel about dis... on one hand, 174 deaths is way too many & we gotta be super careful out there but on da other hand, its not like we're gonna be driving around in pitch blackness or sumn... a lil extra caution cant hurt right? ๐Ÿค” meanwhile, why r they targeting double-parked cars? thats just gonna cause more traffic jams... or maybe its good for da city to be all strict about it? ๐Ÿš— idk

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ก You know how much I hate driving at night after the clocks fall back ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ! It's like, my eyes are still trying to adjust from daylight hours and all I see is dark roads ahead ๐Ÿ˜ต. I'm glad NYPD is cracking down on double-parked vehicles though, it's just so frustrating when you're trying to cross the street and there's a car blocking your way ๐Ÿšซ. And can we please talk about how some drivers still think it's okay to text while driving? Like, what's wrong with these people? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Slow down, pay attention, indeed! ๐Ÿ‘

OMG, I'm low-key freaking out about Daylight Saving Time ending!!! ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I mean, have you seen those roads? They're like, super dark already! And with all these double-parkers everywhere, it's a total tripping hazard... err, I mean, a safety hazard ๐Ÿ˜‚. Slow down, pay attention, yeah yeah, we get it, NYPD Chief Obe ๐Ÿ™. Can't stress enough how crazy those afternoons and evenings are. My aunt almost got into an accident last year during trick-or-treating ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ˜จ. Just wanna make sure everyone gets home safely for the holiday season ๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿ‘. Maybe we should all just, like, totally avoid driving at night? ๐Ÿ˜…

๐Ÿšจ gotta say, daylight saving time is crazy ๐Ÿคฏ... all this time in the dark, it's like our brains are stuck on summer mode ๐ŸŒž... slow down, pay attention... it's not that hard ๐Ÿ™. police need to crack down on those double-parked cars tho ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ... visibility is key ๐Ÿ’ก. and taxi drivers? spot checks all day, erry day ๐Ÿš•๐Ÿ˜’... safety first, always ๐Ÿ‘

omg u gotta be so careful out there rn!! ๐Ÿšจ daylight saving time is basically just a recipe for disaster with all those cars on the road after dark ๐Ÿ˜ต its like, we get it ppl need to adjust their clocks but can't they just take a sec to focus on the road too?!? ๐Ÿ™„ anyway i gotta give props to nypd tho, they're doin some great work with these patrols and warnings...let's all just try to be safe & aware out there, especially with all those little ghosts out trick-or-treating ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ‘ป

Ugh, I was totally caught off guard last year when Daylight Saving Time ended... I was driving back from a brunch with friends in the city and it was getting dark SO fast, like I couldn't even see the street signs anymore! ๐Ÿ™…โ€โ™‚๏ธ Luckily, we made it to our place without any issues, but my friend's kid had to wait 10 minutes for us because he got lost on the way back to his school. Anyway, this year's "Dusk and Darkness" campaign is a good reminder to all of us to be more careful on the roads. Slowing down and paying attention is key... trust me, I've seen some crazy stuff on my commute! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

The impending end of Daylight Saving Time is a stark reminder of the perils that accompany the transition to standard time ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. As the days shorten, the city's authorities are right to urge residents to exercise extreme caution while navigating the streets, especially in the late afternoons and evenings when visibility is reduced.

It's interesting to note that despite the 16% decline in traffic fatalities reported so far this year, the city remains vigilant in its efforts to promote road safety. The NYPD's focus on erratic and distracted driving is particularly noteworthy, as these factors are often undetected by even the most attentive drivers ๐Ÿš—.

The emphasis on reduced visibility taking up to 30 minutes for the eyes to adjust highlights the importance of slowing down and being mindful of one's surroundings. By working together, residents can help minimize the risk of traffic accidents during this critical period ๐Ÿ’ก.

๐Ÿšจ road safety is super important esp with daylight saving time coming to an end! it's crazy how quickly the sun sets now ๐ŸŒ… so yeah, NYPD is right on point about slowing down & paying attention - 174 traffic fatalities in oct already? that's just wrong ๐Ÿ’” especially when u got families with little ones out trick-or-treating ๐Ÿ˜ฌ gotta be careful out there and make sure ur surroundings are clear. dont let double-parking or reckless driving ruin ur evening ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ‘

can't believe they're already cracking down on double-parked vehicles ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ˜ก like what's next? slow down, pay attention is literally all we need to hear from these officials... it's not that hard folks ๐Ÿ™„ gotta give it up for the NYPD and TLC for stepping up patrols though ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿšจ

omg dont even get me started on daylight saving time ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜’ its already a nightmare navigating the streets in nyc, but now with dusk and darkness coming in i'm low-key freaking out ๐Ÿšจ๐ŸŒƒ like seriously ppl slow down and pay attention!!! i mean 174 traffic fatalities is crazy enough let alone double-parked vehicles obstructing crosswalks and bike lanes ๐Ÿšซ๐Ÿ˜ก nyc officials are on the right track emphasizing road safety and reminding us that reduced visibility can be a major factor in crashes ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ‘

ugh, great, just what I needed, another excuse to slow down even more... like I'm going to forget how to drive or something ๐Ÿ™„. 174 fatalities is still a lot, but at least it's a decrease, i guess. and now they're cracking down on double-parked cars, because that was totally not already being done by people who just can't park ๐Ÿ˜’. seriously though, 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust? that's like, ancient history... everyone knows this already ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. and don't even get me started on the whole "slow down and pay attention" thing... like I'm going to become a driver when I see this news ๐Ÿ˜‚.

I don't usually comment but I'm kinda surprised that 174 traffic fatalities is a 16% decrease... sounds like we're getting some progress or something? It's great to hear that law enforcement is stepping up patrols and stuff. But, you know, it's also super concerning that people are still dying on the roads. Like, slow down, pay attention... it's not that hard, right? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ And, I don't know, 30 minutes for your eyes to adjust in the dark is just a really long time... can we get some better streetlights or something? ๐ŸŒƒ

just a heads up fam ๐Ÿ˜Š, daylight saving time ending can be super sketchy on the streets, esp after dark... i mean we're already seeing more crashes, so let's all try to stay alert & focused when driving or walking around ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ‘ฃ. i'm not saying NYC is trying to suck the fun outta trick-or-treating, but maybe just slow down a bit & be aware of where you're going? ๐Ÿ˜… it's all about being safe, right? ๐Ÿ’ก

๐Ÿ˜Š I think it's actually kinda cool that they're highlighting the importance of road safety again! It's always a good idea to slow down and be aware of our surroundings, especially when it gets darker outside ๐ŸŒƒ. The fact that they've already seen a 16% decrease in traffic fatalities is awesome, right? ๐Ÿ™Œ Let's hope this "Dusk and Darkness" campaign really makes a difference! The extra patrols and spot checks are a great idea too - I'm sure the police and taxi commission staff will do their best to keep everyone safe ๐Ÿ’ช. And who doesn't love the idea of trick-or-treating with the family? ๐ŸŽƒ It's just another reminder to be mindful of our surroundings, especially at night ๐ŸŒƒ.

๐ŸŒƒ๐Ÿ˜ฌ Can't stress enough how crucial it is to be super aware on the roads this weekend! With DST ending, visibility is gonna be a major issue, especially after dark. Slowing down & keeping an eye on the road (literally!) is key ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ’ก Those 30 minutes for your peepers to adjust can be up to 30 seconds... trust me, it's no joke. Double-parked cars are also super hazardous, so let's all make sure to keep our eyes peeled for those ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿšซ Let's all get home safely this weekend! ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’•

Yooo, I'm tellin' ya, they're tryin' to distract us from somethin' ๐Ÿค‘... Like, Daylight Saving Time is just an excuse for them to step up patrols and crack down on drivers who are already doin' their job right, you feel? And what's with all this "Slow down, pay attention" vibe? It sounds like they're tryin' to control our minds, man ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, 174 traffic fatalities is still a lot, but have you seen the news lately about those mysterious drone sightings in NYC? That's some real concerns right there ๐Ÿ”. And don't even get me started on them double-parked vehicles obstructing crosswalks... that's just code for "they're tryin' to keep us in line" ๐Ÿšซ.

๐Ÿ˜ฌ When it comes to staying safe on the roads, it's all about being aware of your surroundings... "To avoid criticism, do nothing, say nothing, and be nothing." ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿš—
