Another World review – kaleidoscopic afterlife fairytale with the dark fury of a Greek tragedy

In a striking fusion of Studio Ghibli's whimsy with the brutal intensity of Game of Thrones, Tommy Kai Chung Ng's 'Another World' presents a kaleidoscopic afterlife fairytale replete with gut-wrenching moments of violence. This is not a film for children, as it delves into dark and disturbing themes that will leave even the hardiest viewers unsettled.

Set in an otherworldly realm known as Another World, where souls are processed before embarking on their next life cycle, Ng's world is one of breathtaking beauty and trippy pastel hues. Here, adorable spirits called soul keepers guide the dead to their final destination, leaving behind unresolved resentments tied to vibrant threads of red silk. The domain of Goddess Mira serves as a poignant commentary on humanity's capacity for hate and cruelty, with millennia of untying these knots yielding little progress.

The film follows Gudo, a curious soul keeper, as he delves into the stories of the dead he encounters, including Yuri, a young girl searching for her missing brother, and Princess Goran, consumed by grief over her father's passing. As Gudo attempts to mitigate the malevolent force threatening the Earth and Another World, he unwittingly sets in motion a chain of devastating consequences.

Ng's vision is inventive and imaginative, weaving an intricate narrative that deftly balances the darkness of human nature with the resilience of the human heart. While the film's dizzying array of ideas and stories can be overwhelming at times, it is precisely this complexity that makes 'Another World' such a compelling, if occasionally frustrating, viewing experience.

Ultimately, Ng's bold and unsettling vision serves as a stark reminder that our destructive tendencies are inextricably linked to our capacity for love and compassion. As a work of animated fiction, 'Another World' is both a stunning visual feast and a thought-provoking exploration of the human condition – if only it had been able to harness its full narrative potential more effectively.

I just watched this movie 'Another World' 🤯 and I'm still trying to process everything! The visuals were mind-blowing 🌈, all those pastel hues and soul keepers... it's like a dream 😴. But the story? Yeah, it's heavy 💔. All these dark themes and unresolved resentments tied to red silk 🧵... it's like, how can you make something so beautiful with such darkness? I love how the film explores humanity's capacity for hate and cruelty though 🤕. It's like, we're all stuck in this cycle of violence and suffering. But at the same time, there's this resilience to human nature that shines through 💪.

I wish more of the story had been fleshed out, it felt a bit overwhelming at times 🤯. But overall, I'm impressed by Ng's vision 🎨. It's like a puzzle with so many pieces, and they all fit together in this beautiful, but dark, way 😊.

Here's a quick diagram of what I think is the main conflict:
```
+---------------+
| Gudo's quest |
+---------------+
v
+---------------+
| Malevolent force |
Anyway, 'Another World' is definitely a thought-provoking film 🤔. If you're into dark fantasy and animation, I'd totally recommend checking it out 👍
🤯 I'm so hyped about this new anime film "Another World"! The animation is insane, all those trippy pastel hues are straight fire 🔥💫. And the story is so dark and emotional, it's like Game of Thrones but with more soul keepers 🧚‍♂️💀. I love how it tackles tough themes like hate and cruelty, but also shows us that even in the darkest times, there's always hope 💪. The visuals are breathtaking, I wish I could see this on my Oculus Rift 🤖, it would be a whole new level of immersive experience 👽. Can't wait to dive into more of Tommy Ng's world and explore all the complex ideas he's woven together 💡!
Just watched 'Another World' and I'm still reeling from the experience! 🤯 The animation is straight out of a dream, all those trippy pastel hues and surreal landscapes had me mesmerized. But what really got me was the emotional depth – it's like Tommy Ng tapped into the darkest corners of our souls and brought back this raw, unflinching look at humanity's capacity for hate and love. 🌹 I mean, who needs a happy ending when you can have a thought-provoking commentary on the human condition? 😳 The world-building is insane too – I loved how Ng wove all these different storylines together like a rich tapestry. It's not always easy to follow, but that's part of its charm, right? 💖 And that message about love and compassion being intertwined with destruction? Spot on! 👏
🤯 I just watched this crazy movie 'Another World' and I'm still reeling from it! The animation is like nothing I've ever seen before - so colorful and trippy 🌈💥. But what really got me was the story... it's like a mix of Studio Ghibli's magic with Game of Thrones' darkness 🔪⚔️. It's not for kids, trust me! 😂 The way they explore the dark themes of hate and cruelty is so thought-provoking, but sometimes I felt like it could've gone deeper 🤷‍♀️. Still, it's a stunning visual feast and makes you think about our capacity for love and compassion 💖. Overall, I'm still trying to process everything... any other viewers out there who watched it? 😂
🤯 I just watched Another World and I'm still reeling from the experience! The animation is insane, like something out of a dream 🌙 but the themes are so dark and real it's hard to shake off. I love how the film explores the complexity of human nature, showing us both our capacity for cruelty and kindness at the same time. It's like, what if we could harness that balance and make the world a better place? 😔 The storytelling is a bit jumbled in places but overall it's so thought-provoking and visually stunning 🎥 I need to see more of Tommy Ng's work! 👀
im not sure i agree with this film being described as an afterlife fairytale lol 🤔 it seems way too dark for that label to me. think they're downplaying the graphic violence and disturbing themes a bit much, imo. i mean, who thought it was a good idea to show soul keepers unraveling threads of red silk representing unresolved resentments? sounds like a nightmare come true 😨
