Abusers using AI and digital tech to attack and control women, charity warns

Domestic Abuse on the Rise as Perpetrators Utilize AI, Smart Tech to Control Victims

A staggering number of women who have been abused and controlled by their partners are now being referred to Refuge's specialist services, with record numbers highlighting a disturbing trend. According to the charity, perpetrators are increasingly using cutting-edge technology such as smartwatches, wearable devices, and AI-powered apps to track, stalk, and control their victims.

The situation has become so dire that Refuge has seen a 62% increase in complex cases, involving over 800 women who were subjected to this form of abuse. Moreover, there was also a notable rise in referrals of under-30s, indicating the widespread reach of this issue among all age groups.

Experts warn that these technologies are being used as tools for perpetrators to exert their power and control over victims, often with devastating consequences. The "smart accessories" - such as smartwatches, Oura rings, and Fitbits - can be easily accessed by anyone, allowing them to track the movements of the victim without their consent.

In one harrowing case, a survivor named Mina was forced to flee her abuser, leaving behind her smartwatch in haste. However, this simple act backfired when her abuser used the tracking feature linked to the cloud account to locate her new refuge, exposing her location and perpetuating a sense of constant fear.

The emotional toll on survivors is immense, as they are left to carry the burden of managing their situation without adequate support or protection. As Emma Pickering, head of Refuge's tech-facilitated abuse team, poignantly stated: "It is unacceptable for the safety and wellbeing of women and girls to be treated as an afterthought once a technology has been developed and distributed."

The rise in domestic abuse facilitated by technology has prompted a dire warning from experts. As Pickering noted, perpetrators are increasingly using AI tools to manipulate survivors, often through sophisticated methods such as editing videos or creating fake documents that deceive them into believing they are responsible for their own situation.

Moreover, the increasing misuse of medical tech is feared to pose an even greater threat in the coming years. Insulin tracking devices could potentially be misused by controlling blood sugar levels, leading to fatal consequences.

It's clear that more needs to be done to address this growing issue. Refuge urges the government to increase funding for digital investigations teams and to ensure the technology industry holds itself accountable for designing products that prioritize user safety.

The situation is a stark reminder of how quickly technology can be used against us, often without our consent or awareness. As the fight against domestic abuse continues to gain momentum, it's crucial that we address this critical issue head-on and provide support to those who are most vulnerable.

I'm getting super worried about this ๐Ÿค•... like, I know technology is meant to make our lives easier but when it gets used to control & manipulate people it's just not right ๐Ÿ˜’. These smart devices can be hacked or accessed by others which is a huge concern for survivors of domestic abuse. It's crazy that some abusers are using these gadgets to track their victims' movements and locations, making them feel like they're in constant danger ๐Ÿšจ. We need more support & protection for women & girls who are already going through so much trauma. I think it's essential for the tech industry to take responsibility for designing products that prioritize user safety & well-being ๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ’ธ

๐Ÿšจ 63% of smartwatch users have had their personal data breached in the last year alone ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. This is a massive concern when you think about how easily these devices can be used to track & control people without their consent ๐Ÿค–. The fact that 800 women are being referred to Refuge's services due to complex cases involving AI-powered tracking & surveillance is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ’”.

In the US, domestic violence hotlines received a 25% increase in calls over the past year ๐Ÿ“ˆ. This rise can be largely attributed to the increasing use of technology by perpetrators to control their victims ๐Ÿ“Š. The stats are terrifying - 72% of women who experienced abuse said it was perpetrated by someone they knew ๐Ÿ‘ฅ.

We need to take action now! ๐Ÿ’ช More funding for digital investigations teams & stricter regulations on tech companies would be a great start ๐Ÿšง. If we don't, the consequences will be disastrous ๐ŸŒช๏ธ. We can't just sit back and watch as technology is used against us ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ.

Here's a chart to put this into perspective: ๐Ÿ‘‰

| Country | Domestic Violence Hotline Calls | Increase % |
| --- | --- | --- |
| US | 1,500,000 (2022) | 25% |
| UK | 100,000 (2022) | 30% |
| Australia | 60,000 (2022) | 20% |

Let's make a change! ๐Ÿ’–

I'm literally shaking thinking about these smartwatches being used as tools for control ๐Ÿคฏ. Like, I know some of my friends are into tracking their fitness goals and all, but can you imagine if someone else was using that same device to track your every move without consent? It's like, a nightmare come true ๐Ÿ˜จ. And it's not just smartwatches, it's also AI-powered apps and wearable devices... it's like, the tech industry is basically creating these tools for abusers to use against us ๐Ÿค–. I'm so sorry to hear about Mina's situation... leaving her smartwatch behind was a huge risk, and now she had to deal with the trauma of being tracked again ๐Ÿšซ. We need to talk about this more, like, seriously ๐Ÿ’ฌ. Governments and tech companies need to take responsibility for creating these products that can be used to harm people. It's not just about funding digital investigations teams, it's about designing products that prioritize user safety from the get-go ๐Ÿ”’. I'm literally so frustrated right now ๐Ÿ˜ค, but at the same time, I'm also hopeful that we can make a difference and raise awareness about this issue ๐Ÿ’ช.

๐Ÿšจ tech is literally being used against us ๐Ÿคฏ i mean, smartwatches and fitness trackers should be safe spaces for people, not tools for manipulation. the fact that abusers can track victims without consent is just mind-blowing. we need to hold tech companies accountable for designing products with safety in mind, not just profit ๐Ÿ’ธ. and what's even scarier is how medical tech could be misused to control people's lives... it's like something out of a dystopian novel ๐Ÿ“š. we need more funding for digital investigations teams and better regulations around AI and tech use. this is a crisis that requires immediate attention ๐Ÿ‘€.

๐Ÿšจ The tech industry has got to take responsibility here! I mean, come on, these smartwatches and AI-powered apps are supposed to make our lives easier, not help people control others like they're some kind of tool! ๐Ÿค– We need stricter regulations in place so this doesn't happen again. Like, why can't these devices have a built-in feature that just blocks tracking or location sharing if you don't want it? ๐Ÿšซ It's crazy that we're having to live with the fear of being tracked like lab rats because our abusers are exploiting tech for their own twisted gain! ๐Ÿ’” We need better support systems in place for survivors, too - this is not a tech issue, but a human rights issue. ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm so concerned about this ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. It's like, one day you're scrolling through your fave socials, next thing you know, someone is tracking you down with tech ๐Ÿ“Š. Can't believe how fast things can spiral out of control in an instant. This smartwatch/oura ring business is straight up scary ๐Ÿ’”. I mean, who gives their partner access to that kind of info? It's just not right!

We need more support and resources for survivors of domestic abuse, like Refuge's amazing work ๐Ÿ™. We should be pushing the gov to make tech companies take responsibility for creating safe products ๐Ÿ‘Š. If we don't do something about this, it's gonna get worse ๐Ÿ’ฅ. What can we do? ๐Ÿ’ญ

ugh this is getting outta control ๐Ÿšจ smartwatches & AI apps are being used to stalk & control victims of domestic abuse... like what's next? tracking our sleep patterns too ๐Ÿ˜ด so they can dictate how we live our lives? and the tech industry just sits on its hands? come on, guys. get with the times. this is a major red flag ๐Ÿšจ

ugh i cant believe its taken so long for people to start talking about this i mean how many times do u need to get abused or controlled before ppl wake up? anyway i think the fact that people r using tech 2 control others is literally mind boggling especially with all these smartwatches & fitness trackers just waiting 2 be hacked lol. its so sad 2 hear about mina's story tho she deserves way more than just a refuge. we need better support 4 survivors & we need it now ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’”

I don't think we should be panicking about smartwatches and AI apps being used for abuse - I mean, what's new? People have always been controlling each other with technology, just like they're doing now ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The problem is, women are becoming so dependent on these gadgets that they're not even using them effectively to escape the abuse in the first place ๐Ÿ“ฑ. And let's be real, if a smartwatch can't track down an abuser, what exactly can? ๐Ÿ’ป

omg u guys i cant even i was talking to my ex last wknd and he was literally using his smartwatch 2 track me down i was like super freaked out lol i had 2 change my number & email addr ASAP ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ“ฑ anyway back 2 the news - its literally getting worse n worse wen u think ppl cant get any more creative w/ how they use tech 2 control ppl i mean smartwatches & wearables r not just 4 fitness anymore lol

i feel so bad 4 all these women who are havin 2 go thru this ๐Ÿค• & refugees is doin such amazing work but we need more funding n support 4 their services stat ๐Ÿ’ธ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ the gov needs 2 step up its game & make sure tech companies r held accountable 4 designin products that dont harm ppl

anyway i just wanted 2 say sumtng & now im feelin all anxious lol ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’” the tech industry needs to step up its game ASAP. these smart accessories are being used to control and track people without their consent ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ. how can we trust companies like ours to design products that prioritize our safety when they're just using it as a way to make a buck ๐Ÿ’ธ?

I'm getting so worried about all these smartwatches and wearables being used as tools for control... I mean I know they're convenient and all that but at what cost? My sister got a new smartwatch for her birthday last year and she was literally glued to it, checking notifications every five seconds. But now I'm starting to wonder if someone could be tracking her movements without her even realizing it ๐Ÿคฏ.

I've seen some of my friends get into these toxic relationships where the abuser uses technology to monitor their partner's every move. It's like they're living in a sci-fi movie or something! And the worst part is, once you're caught up in this web of control, it's super hard to break free.

I think we need to have an open conversation about how these technologies are being used and who's holding them accountable for it. I mean, the tech industry needs to do better than just pushing out products without considering the potential consequences ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ. We can't just sit back and let this happen, especially when it affects vulnerable people like women and girls.

it's not surprising anymore ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. like, when you think about it, controlling someone through tech is basically just a fancy way of saying "I'm a stalker" ๐Ÿ’ป. and now we're seeing this trend go mainstream? ๐Ÿš€ no wonder the stats are going up. anyone who's had to deal with this kind of abuse knows that it's not just about the physical stuff, but also the constant feeling of being watched and controlled. and yeah, it's easy for abusers to use tech against their victims - after all, they're already basically walking around with a surveillance device on their wrist ๐Ÿ’ธ.

this is seriously disturbing stuff ๐Ÿค• AI and tech being used as tools for control & abuse is a huge deal. i feel like we're living in a sci-fi movie where ppl have access to our personal info without us even knowing it ๐Ÿ˜ฑ & the fact that survivors have to manage their situation on their own with no support is just heartbreaking ๐Ÿ’” i think we need to hold tech companies accountable for designing products that prioritize user safety, and gov'ts gotta step up too ๐Ÿšจ more funding for digital investigations teams would be a huge help. this is not just about domestic abuse, it's about how quickly tech can turn against us ๐Ÿ‘€

ugh i cant even imagine whats goin on in these people's lives its like they have no respect for each other at all smartwatches and stuff can be so creepy like how would u like 2 b tracked everywhere u go? refuges gettin slammed with cases and its just not right what r we gonna do to stop it?

OMG, this is so disturbing ๐Ÿค•... like I cant even believe people are using smart tech to control their partners! It's like, such a huge leap forward in the wrong direction, you know? And the worst part is that it's becoming more and more common, which means there are way more people affected by this than we even realize ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, can you even imagine having your every move tracked and monitored by someone who's supposed to love and care for you? It's like, totally unacceptable ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. We need to do so much more to stop this from happening and make sure these tech companies are held accountable for their role in enabling this kind of abuse ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ’ป.
