U.S. joins new round of talks with Ukraine and Russia, but Ukrainians skeptical of any major breakthrough

US-led Trilateral Talks with Ukraine and Russia Hit Snag as Kyiv Loses Trust in Breakthrough.

A new round of trilateral peace talks involving the US, Ukraine, and Russia began in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday, but Ukrainian officials are skeptical about any major breakthroughs emerging from these discussions. The negotiations follow a brief energy truce, which was launched after the first three-way meeting between the parties at the end of January.

However, just days into the new round of talks, Russia broke the truce with a flurry of drone and missile strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, leaving over 1,170 apartment buildings in Kyiv without heating. The attacks have raised questions about the sincerity of Russia's commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

While US officials described the talks as "productive" and said they would continue tomorrow morning, Ukrainian representatives are more cautious in their assessment. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia's actions demonstrate that its leaders do not take diplomacy seriously. The strikes have also left Ukraine without heat during freezing winter months, causing widespread suffering among civilians.

The talks focus on two key sticking points: Russia's demands for Ukraine to formally cede territory occupied in the Donbas region and Ukrainian demands for credible guarantees from Western powers to protect against future attacks. It is unlikely that these issues will be resolved during this round of negotiations, with Ukraine's foreign ministry spokesperson stating that they would require discussion by heads of state.

However, progress may be made on other issues, such as how security guarantees for Ukraine could work once a ceasefire takes effect. Ukrainian officials are cautiously optimistic about the possibility of a breakthrough, but remain wary of Russia's intentions.

As negotiations continue, it remains to be seen whether these talks can build momentum towards a lasting peace agreement or if Russia will continue to sabotage any efforts at reconciliation.

Ukraine's right to be worried πŸ€”, I mean, who wouldn't trust Russia after those drone and missile strikes on Kyiv? It's like they're just pretending to care about finding a peaceful resolution πŸ’ͺ. The energy truce was already looking shaky, but now it's just a joke πŸ˜‚. Ukraine needs some serious guarantees from the West that they'll actually protect them against future attacks 🚨.

But hey, let's not give up hope yet πŸ™. Ukrainian officials are trying to stay positive about the possibility of progress on other issues, like security guarantees once a ceasefire takes effect πŸ’•. We just need to see if Russia is willing to put in the effort to make that happen 🀝. The talks can't keep hitting snags like this 🚫, or we'll never get a lasting peace agreement πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ.

ugh dont know what to think anymore πŸ€” this trilateral talks thingy is just so confusing... like how can u say its productive but then russia goes and breaks the truce again? πŸ˜’ it's all just a big mess, right?

i mean, whats up with russias demands for ukrania to cede territory? sounds like they're just trying to get away with something πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ and ukrainian reps are all "no way" but why cant we just have some kinda dialogue that doesnt involve all this drama? πŸ’¬

and dont even get me started on the energy strikes... 1,170 buildings without heat is crazy 😩 how many ppl will have to suffer because of russias actions? πŸ€•

OMG I'm so confused 🀯! I mean, I'm trying to stay positive and all, but this is like, really tough for Ukraine right now πŸ˜”. Those drone strikes were just brutal πŸ’£. And the fact that they're still without heat in Kyiv? That's just heartbreaking ❀️. I can't even imagine how hard it must be for them, especially during winter 🌑️.

I don't know what to think about these talks anymore πŸ€”. On one hand, US officials are saying they're "productive" and all that πŸ’Ό. But on the other hand, Ukraine's like "yeah right" πŸ˜’. I just hope those talks can make some progress or something 🀞. I mean, we've got to keep hoping for a peaceful resolution here πŸ’•.

I'm definitely rooting for Ukraine, though πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦! They're going through so much and they deserve all our support ❀️. Let's just keep sending love and positivity their way πŸŒˆπŸ’«

Talks are all fun and games until someone breaks the truce... πŸ’₯πŸ”΄

I dont think its good that russia is breaking the truce just days into the talks πŸ€•. Ukraine has been suffering so much already and losing trust in russia is understandable. I think we need to be realistic about this conflict, it wont be resolved overnight. The US and other western powers have been saying they are committed to helping ukraine but its hard to see how thats going to work when russias actions are so reckless 🚫. Maybe they can focus on getting security guarantees for ukraine working once a ceasefire is in place? That would be a good start πŸ’‘.
