'It's the rubbish, female A-team!' Derry Girl Lisa McGee on her hilarious new mystery thriller

Lisa McGee's new eight-part mystery thriller, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, follows three friends, Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara, who reunite for a friend's funeral after their teenage years at school. The show is a mix of thriller and comedy, with a touch of surrealism, as the trio tries to solve the mystery behind their friend Greta's death.

The story jumps back and forth in time, showing the friends' past adventures and misadventures. Saoirse, a TV writer in London, feels trapped in her life, while Robyn, a glamorous mum of four, is married to a man she doesn't really like. Dara, on the other hand, lives at home with her overbearing mother.

As they investigate Greta's death, they encounter a cast of quirky characters, including a Knives Out-style detective and a Kenny Rogers impersonator who met his demise in a bucking bronco. The show is full of dark humor and satire, poking fun at Northern Irish culture and society.

McGee drew inspiration from her own life and experiences growing up in Belfast. She wanted to create a story about female friendships that span decades and the pressure to edit those shared memories to suit our ideas of ourselves.

The show's tone is quintessentially Northern Irish, with a touch of Lynchian bleakness and surrealism. McGee hopes that audiences will enjoy the show's dark humor and satire, as well as its portrayal of strong, active female protagonists.

"How to Get to Heaven from Belfast" is available on Netflix in February 2023.

Umm, I think Lisa McGee's new show sounds super cool ๐Ÿค”... but at the same time, I'm not sure if I want to watch a mystery thriller with all that dark humor and satire ๐Ÿ˜ณ. I mean, can't we just have a light-hearted drama for once? But then again, the whole concept of jumping back and forth in time and exploring female friendships across decades is kinda fascinating ๐Ÿค“... but what if it's just gonna be too sappy or cheesy for me? And don't even get me started on the surrealism โ€“ I love it sometimes, but not when it's done wrong ๐Ÿ˜. I guess I'm all over the place with this one...

I'm so down for this new show ๐Ÿคฉ! The concept sounds so intriguing - three friends reunite after all these years to solve a mystery, but it's not just about the crime, it's about their complicated pasts and how they've all ended up in weird places ๐Ÿ˜‚. I love that it's got a mix of thriller and comedy, with a touch of surrealism... like, who wouldn't want to watch a Kenny Rogers impersonator meet his demise on a bucking bronco ๐Ÿค ? The fact that it's based on Lisa McGee's own experiences growing up in Belfast adds another layer of depth to the story. I'm especially interested in seeing how they portray strong female friendships and the pressure to edit memories to suit our ideas of ourselves ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. Can't wait to binge-watch this one! ๐Ÿ‘€

I just watched this new show "How to Get to Heaven from Belfast" and it was literally blowing my mind ๐Ÿคฏ! I mean, Lisa McGee's writing style is so unique, it's like she took a bit of her childhood in Belfast and mashed it with some Edgar Allan Poe vibes... you know what I mean? It's like that old saying "you can't go home again" but in this show, they're literally trying to figure out what happened to their friend Greta and it's like McGee is poking fun at the whole idea of nostalgia, ya know?

And oh man, the characters! Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara are all so quirky and relatable... I was screaming with laughter when the Kenny Rogers impersonator died on that bucking bronco ๐Ÿค ๐Ÿด. The show's got this dark humor thing going on but it's not like it's mean-spirited or anything... more like McGee is just pointing out the absurdity of life, you feel?

I loved how McGee drew inspiration from her own life and experiences growing up in Belfast... it shows that she's still got a connection to that place even after all these years. And can we talk about Saoirse for a sec? She's like the ultimate relatable protagonist - I mean, who hasn't felt trapped in their life at some point? ๐Ÿ’–

Ugh, I'm so over how long it takes for shows like this to become available ๐Ÿ™„. I mean, Netflix says Feb 2023, but I've been searching for this show for months now and all I see are ads ๐Ÿ“บ. Can't they just give us a release date already? ๐Ÿ˜ฉ

And don't even get me started on the synopsis - it sounds like such a wild ride ๐ŸŽ , but only if you're into that sort of thing. I'm not really sure what to expect from this show, and honestly, I'm a bit skeptical about the whole "surrealism" vibe ๐Ÿ˜’. I mean, can't it just be a normal mystery thriller for once? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I'm so stoked for Lisa McGee's new show ๐Ÿคฉ! I think it sounds like a real wild ride, jumping back and forth in time and all that. The mix of thriller and comedy with a dash of surrealism has me curious - how will they balance those tones? And the cast of quirky characters sounds amazing, from the Knives Out-style detective to the Kenny Rogers impersonator... what's the deal with that guy?

I love that McGee drew inspiration from her own life in Belfast, though. She's tackling some heavy stuff, like female friendships and societal pressure, but also infusing it with dark humor and satire. It sounds like a really unique take on those themes.

One thing that got me is the portrayal of strong, active female protagonists - I'm all about that! It's so important to see women who are complex and multifaceted, especially in shows that might otherwise default to tropes or stereotypes. McGee seems to be getting it right here. Overall, I'm excited to check out "How to Get to Heaven from Belfast" when it drops on Netflix in February 2023 ๐Ÿ“บ

idk how ppl r gonna feel about dis new show tho? it sounds like it's gonna be all over the place - thriller, comedy, surrealism... i mean i love a good mystery, but sometimes u just wanna stick w/ one vibe, you know? ๐Ÿค”

i'm curious to see how lisa mcgee pulls off that northern irish culture thing tho. i've only been to belfast once & it was like, 5 yrs ago? so yeah, gotta trust her instincts on that front. ๐Ÿ˜Š

and i'm glad she's tackling female friendships, 'cause that's def one of the most underrated aspects of tv shows. we need more shows like this, where the girls are in charge & u can see their dynamics play out on screen ๐Ÿ“บ

I'm low-key obsessed with Lisa McGee's new show ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ“บ! I mean, the premise is like, what if your friends from school became your family when life gets weird? ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ’• It sounds so relatable, you know? ๐Ÿ˜‚ The way she weaves together thriller and comedy elements is genius ๐Ÿ’ก, and I love how it pokes fun at Northern Irish culture โ€“ it's all so witty and sharp! โš™๏ธ๐Ÿ‘

But what really gets me is the female friendships ๐Ÿค—๐Ÿ‘ซ. It's like, women supporting each other through thick and thin, and not afraid to get a little weird ๐Ÿ˜œ. I'm all about that vibe ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฅ. And McGee's got skills โ€“ she's created this whole world that feels so authentic ๐ŸŒ.

I'm hyped for the Netflix release ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ’ป in Feb 2023 โ€“ can't wait to binge and laugh (and maybe even cry a little ๐Ÿ˜ญ) with these quirky characters ๐Ÿ‘ซ๐Ÿคช!

I'm so down for a show like this! ๐Ÿคฉ I love how it explores themes of female friendships and the way we remember our past. It sounds like McGee's got a real knack for crafting complex, quirky characters ๐Ÿคช. The dark humor and satire are gonna be hilarious, but also maybe a little uncomfortable to watch - in the best way possible ๐Ÿ˜‚. I'm excited to see how it all comes together. Can't wait for February 2023!

idk why everyone's making such a big deal about this show ๐Ÿค” it's just another mystery thriller with some comedy thrown in. i mean, the concept sounds cool and all, but have you seen how many of these shows are out there already? like, how to make a story that jumps back and forth in time without getting too convoluted? ๐Ÿคฏ it sounds like lisa mcgee is trying to be all clever with the dark humor and satire, but at the end of the day, it's just a show. not life or death or anything ๐Ÿ’€

omg I'm so down for this new show ๐Ÿคฉ I've been bingeing all these detective shows like Sherlock and true crime podcasts and this one sounds like it's gonna be a wild ride... but what if the mystery is actually real? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ I mean, a Kenny Rogers impersonator who died on a bucking bronco? that's some crazy stuff! ๐Ÿค  I'm also loving the idea of these three friends trying to solve the mystery together, it's like a 90s TV movie revival ๐Ÿ“บ. and I love how the show is poking fun at Northern Irish culture, satire is my jam ๐Ÿ˜‚. can't wait to get lost in this one! ๐ŸŽฌ

I just watched an episode of this show and I gotta say, it's got me thinking about how we present ourselves to the world ๐Ÿค”. These three friends are trying to solve a mystery together, but they're also dealing with their own personal issues, like feeling stuck or trapped in life. It makes you wonder, do we really know ourselves as well as we think we do? I love how it pokes fun at Northern Irish culture and society too, it's like McGee is using satire to make a point about our shared human experiences ๐Ÿ˜‚. And the way it jumps back and forth in time is so cleverly done, it's like watching an old diary or something ๐Ÿ“š. I'm hooked on this show now!

just watched the trailer for this new show on netflix ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘€ it looks kinda weird but i think that's what makes it interesting? like, how do you make a thriller and comedy mix work? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ i'm intrigued by the quirky characters tho, especially the Kenny Rogers impersonator ๐Ÿ˜‚. also, i love that lisa mcgee drew from her own life experiences - female friendships are everything ๐Ÿ’–. hope it's good, gonna watch it when it comes out in february ๐Ÿ“บ

I'm not sure if I'd want to watch a show with such an unpredictable tone ๐Ÿ˜... I mean, it's supposed to be this dark humor and satire thing, but I'm not sure how consistent that'll be throughout the whole series. And what's up with the surrealism? I can see why McGee would draw inspiration from her own life in Belfast, but I hope she didn't lose herself in the process ๐Ÿค”.

I do like the sound of Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara as the main characters - three strong women trying to figure out their lives. But the show's also got some weird stuff going on, like a Kenny Rogers impersonator dying in a bucking bronco... I mean, what's the point of that? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I'm low-key excited about Lisa McGee's new show ๐Ÿค” but I gotta say, it sounds like a wild ride! The premise of three friends trying to solve the mystery of their friend's death is already intriguing and I love that it jumps back and forth in time ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. I'm also here for the dark humor and satire - Northern Irish culture isn't often represented in TV shows so that's a win in my book ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช.

However, I do have some reservations about how the show handles its portrayal of female friendships and societal pressures ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. Is it just going to be a bunch of 'girl power' cliches or is McGee actually tackling something real? And what's up with the Kenny Rogers impersonator? ๐Ÿค  That sounds like a weird plot twist.

Overall, I'm willing to give it a try and see if it lives up to its promising premise ๐Ÿ’ซ. Maybe it'll be a guilty pleasure that I can binge-watch on a lazy Sunday ๐Ÿ˜ด.

Ugh, just heard about this new show "How to Get to Heaven from Belfast" ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ... sounds like a messy mix of comedy and thriller vibes ๐Ÿ˜’... three friends reunite for a friend's funeral after all these years, but it's not even like they're really solving anything... just kinda wandering through their memories, feeling trapped & stuck ๐Ÿ’”... the creator drew from her own life in Belfast, which is cool, but also kinda sad ๐ŸŒซ๏ธ... I mean, who hasn't felt like Greta, living a life that isn't really yours? ๐Ÿ˜’... Northern Irish culture is already weird enough without this added drama ๐Ÿ˜ณ... anyway, it's on Netflix, so if you're into that sorta thing, go for it ๐ŸŽฅ

I'm so stoked to see Lisa McGee bringing some Northern Irish love to Netflix! ๐Ÿคฉ I mean, her take on the past and present is super relatable - we've all felt trapped or stuck at some point in our lives, right? ๐Ÿ˜‚ And I love how she's not afraid to poke fun at our culture and society, even when it comes to darker stuff. It's like she's saying, "Hey, let's talk about the weird stuff that happens here, but also let's have a laugh about it."

What I'm really excited about is the portrayal of these strong female friends - they're not your typical stereotypes, you know? Saoirse, Robyn, and Dara are all so different, but they've got this deep bond that just draws you in. And I think McGee's experiences growing up in Belfast definitely shine through in this show. It's like she's saying, "Hey, we may have our quirks, but we're also super resilient." ๐Ÿ’ช

I donโ€™t usually comment but I just binge-watched How to Get to Heaven from Belfast on Netflix ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ‘€ and I gotta say itโ€™s a wild ride! I love how the show blends thriller, comedy, and surrealism - it's like a deliciously weird stew ๐Ÿฒ. The female leads are so well-written, they feel like real people you can relate to... or maybe even get frustrated with ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. And the dark humor is on point, poking fun at Northern Irish culture in all its complexity. I donโ€™t know if McGee succeeded in making me laugh and cringe at the same time, but it was definitely entertaining ๐Ÿคฃ. One thing that really resonated with me was how she tackled the theme of editing memories to suit our own narratives... it's something we can all relate to, right?

I just watched the first ep of this new show and I gotta say it's trippy! The mix of thriller and comedy has me hooked but also kinda confused ๐Ÿคฏ. I love how McGee draws inspiration from her own life, it gives the show a raw energy that feels real. But what really got me is how she tackles those 'perfect' relationships and societal expectations - it's like she's poking fun at us all with her dark humor ๐Ÿ˜‚. And can we talk about Saoirse for a sec? She's literally stuck in this rut and I'm like "girl, break free!" ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. The surrealism is also giving me major Twin Peaks vibes ๐ŸŒฒ. Can't wait to see what the rest of the episodes bring!

I'm so over this whole binge-watching thing ๐Ÿ“บ... I mean, what's wrong with just watching one show at a time like we used to? Anyway, back in the day, we had actual friends who were always up for an adventure, not stuck in their own bubbles like these characters. I loved how Northern Irish culture is all about embracing the weirdness of life - it's like they're saying, "Sod off, we're gonna do our own thing!" ๐Ÿคช

I'm intrigued by Lisa McGee's take on female friendships and memories. It sounds like she's tapped into something real here. The idea that these characters are trying to piece together their past is so relatable - I still have my old VHS tapes of The Sopranos that I haven't watched in ages ๐Ÿ“ผ. But hey, at least this show will be available on Netflix when I get around to watching it...
