Doug Pederson, Jason Kelce and Nick Foles revisit the Philly Special for new ESPN documentary

New ESPN Documentary Explores Origins, Impact of the Iconic 'Philly Special'

The Eagles' Super Bowl LII win will be revisited in a new ESPN "30 for 30" documentary centered around the famous trick play known as the Philly Special. The film connects the fourth-and-goal call to Philadelphia's underdog spirit, featuring members of the 2017-18 team that won their first-ever Super Bowl.

According to Sal Paolantonio, an ESPN reporter, the Philly Special is key to understanding both the Eagles and the city itself. "If you want to understand Philadelphia, you have to understand the Philadelphia Eagles," he said in the documentary's trailer. "And to understand the Eagles, you have to understand the Philly Special."

Directed by Angela Zender and Shannon Furman, the film delves into the play's origins, execution, and lasting impact. The documentary will examine how a group of five underdogs – center Jason Kelce, running back Corey Clement, tight end Trey Burton, quarterback Nick Foles, and the snap that set it off from Jason Kelce to Cory Clement – managed to pull off an upset against one of the greatest dynasties in NFL history.

The film features interviews with former coach Doug Pederson, the four players who touched the ball during the play, as well as analysts, former players, and fans. "We felt pretty confident that we were going to go in there and have a pretty good game offensively," Jason Kelce recalled in the trailer. "Now, we didn’t know we were going to have to play that good."

The documentary also explores Philadelphia's underdog mentality and its city-wide passion for football. For Shannon Furman, director of the film, this has been a dream project – having grown up as an Eagles fan, he sees the Philly Special as more than just a trick play but a symbol of the team's perseverance.

"The Philly Special" is set to premiere on ESPN at 9 p.m. on Friday, February 6, and offers fans a chance to relive that unforgettable Super Bowl moment.

🤯 I mean, what's up with this Philly Special doc? It's like, they're trying to say the Eagles aren't just a team, they're a symbol of everything Philly is all about - underdogs, grit, and passion 🌟💪. And I'm here for it! I love how they're digging into the roots of that play, showing us how it wasn't just some fluke, but a calculated risk that paid off in the biggest way possible 💥. The fact that they're featuring so many players from that 2017-18 team is genius - we get to see what went down behind the scenes and why it was such an iconic moment 📺. And can we talk about how Cory Clement got to be part of all this? He's like, the ultimate Philly underdog story 🤣. I'm already super hyped for this doc, and I know I'll be watching it on Feb 6th with a big ol' bowl of popcorn 🍿👍

I'm so hyped for this documentary 🤩, I mean, who doesn't love the Eagles? The way they talk about how the Philly Special is all about underdog spirit in Philly is so true - we're always rooting for the underdogs, whether it's in football or life. And that play was just pure genius 😂, I still get chills thinking about it. It's not just about the team though, it's about the city itself and how football brings everyone together 💕. Can't wait to watch it on Feb 6th!

idk why espn needs to do another documentary on this, like, we all know the eagles won super bowl lol but seriously tho, i love how it's not just about the play itself but also about philly's underdog spirit & how it resonates with the city, jason kelce's interview in the trailer gives me chills 🤯 the way he talks about being "pretty confident" that they'd have a good game offensively is just so humble and admirable 💪 can't wait to watch this documentary on feb 6th!

🏈📺 I'm hyped for this docu 🤩! The Philly Special was such an insane play, it's crazy how much it's been cemented in NFL history 💥. As someone who loves visualizing complex concepts, I think the diagram of the play would be SO cool 🎨. Can you imagine Jason Kelce's snap to Corey Clement as a node in a network graph? 😂 It's amazing how that one play embodies the Eagles' underdog spirit and Philly's passion for football. The documentary will surely give us all a fresh perspective on that iconic moment 👍. Fingers crossed it's as engaging as the trailer looks 🤞

🤔 I don't know about this new documentary, seems like just another money grab for ESPN. "30 for 30" has been out there forever and they always find ways to reuse old ideas. And what's with all these interviews? Can't the players talk about themselves without some ESPN analyst chiming in 🙄. It's like they're trying to make it more "special" than it actually was. The Philly Special was just a cool play, not some deep symbol of the city's underdog spirit 🤷‍♂️. And what's with the title? "The Philly Special" is already iconic, do they really need a documentary to confirm its greatness? 😒

I'm not sure I get all the fuss about the Philly Special 🤔. It was just a trick play that happened to work out, you know? And yeah, it's cool that it's like a symbol of underdog spirit and all that 🏈, but I mean, teams have been pulling off crazy plays for years without making it into this documentary hype 🤷‍♂️. And what's up with the whole "you gotta understand Philadelphia to understand the Eagles" thing? It just feels like a bunch of sports analysts trying to sell a narrative 😒. Can't we just enjoy the play for what it is – an impressive bit of football? 👎

OMG, I'm so hyped for this new docu 🎥🏈! I mean, who doesn't love the Eagles' underdog spirit? 🤩 And the Philly Special is like, the ultimate symbol of perseverance and teamwork. I was literally on the edge of my seat when they pulled that off in SB LII 😲. It's so cool to see how that one play connected with the entire city and team. I'm sure it'll be an emotional watch, especially for fans who were there that day 🤗. The fact that Jason Kelce and those other players got to relive that moment is insane 💥! Can't wait to watch it and get all nostalgic 😎

I gotta say, I'm loving this documentary concept 🤩. Growing up in Philly, you can feel the city's underdog spirit, and it sounds like the Philly Special is more than just a trick play - it's a symbol of the team's perseverance and determination 💪. I mean, who wouldn't want to relive that moment when the Eagles came from behind to take down the Patriots? It's gonna be awesome to see some old footage and hear from the guys who were there 📺. And I'm glad they're highlighting Jason Kelce - he's one of my favorite players ever 👍. Bring on February 6th, can't wait to watch! 😊

I'm so hyped for this docu 🤩! I mean, who doesn't love the Eagles? And that Philly Special was pure magic ✨. I think it's cool how they're exploring the city's underdog spirit and how it relates to the team. I grew up in Philly too, and I can totally relate to that feeling of being an underdog but coming together as a team and winning 🏆. The fact that it was all about those five players who made it happen is what makes it so special. And I love how they're bringing back the memories for fans like me who were living through it 😍. It's gonna be a wild ride watching this docu, can't wait! 💥
