Amidst a hail of nearly 60 bullets on Saturday afternoon, a life was lost and two others left scarred in the seemingly senseless attack on Little Village. The violent ambush occurred when Devonsha Conquallin Collier, 35, and his companions – aged 39 and 42 – walked back to their vehicle after purchasing car parts in the early afternoon.
The tranquility of the scene was shattered by two unidentified assailants, who emerged from a silver four-door Honda, which had been parked nearby. One gunman was clad entirely in gray, armed with a rifle, while his accomplice wore all black and wielded a handgun. The pair unleashed a deadly fusillade before fleeing into an unknown direction.
Collier, a resident of the Grand Boulevard neighborhood, suffered multiple gunshot wounds – twice to the head, twice to the abdomen, and three times in the back. Unfortunately, despite being rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, his condition proved fatal. Collier was pronounced dead at 3:54 a.m. Sunday morning.
In contrast, two other victims were taken to Stroger Hospital with varying degrees of severity. The 39-year-old male suffered gunshot wounds to the back and was listed in fair condition, while his companion, aged 42, also sustained injuries to the back, arms, and hip before being admitted in similar circumstances.
The police investigation has recovered a staggering number of bullets – 33 rifle rounds and 24 nine-millimeter rounds – from the scene. As of Tuesday morning, however, no one had been taken into custody, leaving officials with a multitude of unanswered questions about this senseless attack.
