Flavor Flav's Unlikely Olympic Role: The Bobsleigh 'Hype Man'
In a surprise move, American rapper Flavor Flav has joined the US bobsleigh and skeleton team as their official "hype man". The 66-year-old founding member of Grammy-nominated hip-hop group Public Enemy was named the team sponsor on Monday for the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina in February.
Flav spent time with the US Bobsled/Skeleton (USABS) team at the 2002 Olympic track in Utah earlier this week, trying his hand at both skeleton and bobsleigh. He was not initially pleased with the safety precautions taken by team officials, but eventually reached a top speed of 67mph during his second run.
Flav's unconventional role has generated widespread excitement among fans. Dan Barefoot, a US skeleton athlete, described Flav as "one of the coolest, most adventurous men that I've ever met". The rapper even managed to get some of the team members hyped despite being an unorthodox addition to the team.
Flav is no stranger to lending his support to Olympic teams. In 2024, he was the official hype man for the US women's water polo team at the Paris Olympics and also made a financial contribution to discus thrower Veronica Fraley after she posted about her rent issues on social media.
Team officials praised Flav's unique energy and authenticity, stating that he embodies the same grit and dedication that define their athletes. Flav himself described the partnership as a "blessing" and said it was "cooler than Cool Runnings". The Winter Games will take place from February 6-22.
