Dick Vitale is fired up for the upcoming college basketball season, which promises to be "Awesome" with a capital A. The Dick Vitale Invitational on November 4th in Charlotte will kick off the party, featuring Duke versus Texas.
Twelve storylines have caught Vitale's attention:
Florida is looking to win back-to-back national championships, thanks to Alex Condon returning from the NBA draft and a deep roster that includes Rueben Chinyelu and Thomas Haugh. The Gators are a serious contender with Coach Todd Golden at the helm.
Duke has Cameron Boozer, considered one of the top contenders for the 2026 NBA draft, alongside other talented players like Dame Sarr and Nikolas Khamenia. The Blue Devils will try to defend their ACC title under Coach Jon Scheyer.
Houston's stacked roster includes Emanuel Sharp, Milos Uzan, Joseph Tugler, Mercy Miller, Chris Cenac Jr., and Isiah Harwell – all key contributors from last year’s title game run. Kelvin Sampson’s culture of toughness, discipline, and defense is a proven formula.
Purdue has Braden Smith, the floor general of the nation, aiming to win the Bobby Hurley record for most assists in NCAA history. The Boilermakers have Trey Kaufman-Renn as their 20-point scorer and a veteran core that could challenge for the national title.
Kansas State's P.J. Haggerty is one of many top international players joining high-major rosters this season. Jerome Tang's team has a good chance to make it to the Final Four.
The Big East is back with UConn, St. John's, and other power programs competing for the conference title.
A new era of college basketball has begun, thanks to changes in rules and international players joining high-major rosters. The Diaper Dandies – top freshmen recruits like Darryn Peterson at Kansas, Cameron Boozer at Duke, and Mikel Brown Jr. at Louisville – are dominating the scene.
The season starts with heavy matchups in the Champions Classic and The Players Era Festival. Finally, Dick Vitale promises that this season will bring smarter hoops, thanks to coaches’ challenges, cleaner continuous motion rules, and clearer foul guidelines.

The addition of international players is going to shake things up and I think it's awesome for the game. It's like a whole new generation of talent is taking over. But seriously though, with coaches like Kelvin Sampson at Houston, he's got that culture thing down pat. He needs to bring that toughness and discipline to the court every night or they're gonna struggle against teams like Duke and Texas.
