New Jersey driver hit by passing car following 4 a.m. turnpike crash

A fatal collision unfolded early Monday morning on the New Jersey Turnpike, leaving a Keyport man dead. Albert R. Masonius, 46, was struck and killed by an SUV shortly after exiting his vehicle while attempting to repair damage from a previous car crash.

Eyewitnesses reported that Masonius' Nissan had collided with a Toyota minivan following a multi-vehicle wreck on the Turnpike's inner roadway. The initial collision involved several vehicles, including a Mazda SUV, a Honda SUV, and another Kia SUV. According to authorities, Masonius' vehicle was left disabled in the center lane by the chain reaction of events.

However, it appears that Masonius himself may have become a second casualty when he attempted to exit his damaged car. The Kia SUV is believed to have struck Masonius' Nissan, leading to his fatal encounter with another SUV on foot. Two motorists in the Honda SUV were injured during the accident.

Despite the severity of the incident, authorities have yet to identify or question the driver of the SUV that claimed Masonius' life.

Ugh, this is just so sad ... I mean, can you imagine being on the road and having to deal with all these car accidents? It's like, every time we think we're safe, something crazy happens . And it's even more heartbreaking when someone tries to help themselves after getting into an accident and ends up getting hurt or worse .

I'm so glad there were some people around who witnessed the whole thing, though. It's always important for us to look out for each other on the road ️. As for the Kia SUV driver... I hope they're okay and can handle the pressure of what happened .

You know what really got me? The fact that Masonius was trying to fix his own car after an accident . We should be supporting each other, not putting ourselves in harm's way when we need help . Let's all try to stay calm and focused on the road from now on, okay?

ugh this is crazy can't believe someone died trying to fix their car on the side of the turnpike I'm all for helping out and being a good Samaritan but not in the middle of a highway what's with people not having a tow truck or roadside assistance service nearby? It seems like this guy was just walking around with no plan of action, trying to fix his car without any backup... it's just so reckless.

what's wrong with people these days? first, they're stuck in a multi-vehicle wreck on the Turnpike and then one of 'em gets out to fix their car... meanwhile, another guy is driving around like a maniac and hits them... what a crazy world we live in. and now this poor dude, Masonius, ends up getting killed while trying to do his job . it's just so senseless. two people injured tho, that's something, i guess

I think it's kinda weird they're not pressing charges against anyone involved in this wreck. I mean, Albert R. Masonius was trying to fix his car and ended up getting killed, what if he wasn't supposed to be out there on the road at all? It's like the system just let him fall through the cracks . Plus, the Kia SUV driver walked away from this whole thing without any issues. That's just not right in my book . The authorities need to get their act together and make sure everyone involved is held accountable for their actions .
